2024 Big Ten wrestling tournament: Live updates, results, analysis

184 pounds: No. 6 Layne Malczewski (Michigan State) vs. 

184 pounds: No. 4 Ryder Rogotze (Ohio State) pins Aiden Riggins (Iowa) 

This is not a good matchup for Riggins, given Rogotkze’s funk. Boom. There it is. A first-period fall for the Buckeye. 

184 pounds: No. 8 Brian Soldano (Rutgers) vs. No. 9 Troy Fisher (Northwestern)

Fisher is on the board first. Soldano is funky, so Fisher made a smart strategic move giving himself the lead early. Fisher extends his lead 5-2 with less than a minute to go in the second period. Takedown Soldano! We’re all tied up! 

184 pounds: No. 5 Jaden Bullock vs. No. 12 James Rowley (Purdue), 5-0 

Michigan has looked solid all morning, and Bullock continues this trend. He holds a 5-0 lead heading into the third period.  

174 pounds: No. 6 Jackson Turley (Rutgers) outscores Dominic Solis (Maryland), 17-14

Turley has Solis on his back! Solis works his way out of danger, but gives up seven points (a takedown and four back points) in the process. Love the action on this mat, as Turley holds the lead (with riding time) 15-11. Turley takes the win 17-14. 

174 pounds: No. 7 Max Maylor dominates No. 10 Brody Baumann, 18-5

Maylor is on the board first with an early takedown. He adds another three points with a second takedown and holds a 6-1 lead heading into the second period. Ninety seconds to go in the third period, and Maylor leads 11-5. Maylor takes the win in dominant fashion 18-5. 

174 pounds: No. 4 Edmond Ruth (Illinois) takes down No. 13 DJ Shannon (Michigan State), 7-1

With 30 seconds to go in the second period, Ruth’s escape point is the only point on the board. One minute to go. Shannon also has an escape point, but Ruth had the riding time point. That could have been enough to win it, but Ruth wasn’t satisfied with a one-point win. He picked up a short-time takedown and back points to earn a 7-1 win. 

174 pounds: No. 3 Patrick Kennedy (Iowa) techs No. 14 David Ferrante, 19-4

Kennedy is keeping Iowa’s offense rolling. He leads 6-1 at the end of the first period. Ferrante chooses bottom to start the second period, and he escapes. Kennedy leads 6-2. The Hawkeye is looking for bonus. There will be a tight team race for second, and this kind of energy and effort from Kennedy could go a long way for Iowa. Kennedy leads 10-2 with 70 seconds to go in the third period. That’s a tech fall for Patrick Kennedy! 

174 pounds: No. 9 Andrew Sparks (Minnesota) upsets No. 8 Donnell Washington, 10-5

Sparks holds a 3-1 lead heading into the second period. With 1:45 to go in the third period, Sparks’ lead now sits a 5-1. Sparks wins it 10-5!

174 pounds: No. 5 Rocco Welsh (Ohio State) bonuses No. 12 Bubba Wilson (Nebraskas), 14-4 

Welsh has had an outstanding freshman season, and he isn’t slowing down. He leads 7-2 over Wilson heading into the third period. Welsh with bonus! He picks up the 14-4 win. 

165 pound: No. 10 Blaine Brenner (Minnesota) pins No. 7 Stoney Buell (Purdue) 

Brenner with the fall! He’s moving on after an upset win. 

165 pounds: No. 3 Mikey Caliendo (Iowa) pins No. 14 AJ Rodrigues (Maryland)

Mikey Caliendo is all offense, all the time. He leads 10-1 with two minutes of riding time heading into the third period. That’s a fall for Mikey Caliendo! Big team points for Iowa! 

165 pounds: No. 4 Caleb Fish (Michigan State) pins No. 13 Anthony White (Rutgers) 

Fish is fighting for the fall in the second period! And he gets it! That’s back-to-back wins for the Spartans today! 

165 pounds: No. 6 Cameron Amine (Michigan) takes down No. 11 Chris Moore, 4-1 (SV)

A healthy Cam Amine can compete for a title, but the Wolverine All-American has struggled to find that offense this year. This one is all tied up 1-1 with one minute to go in the third period. Sudden victory! Thirty seconds. Takedown Amine! Let’s go to the refs for review. Call confirmed. That’s another Michigan sudden victory win!

165 pounds: No. 9 Tyler Lillard (Indiana) pins No. 8 Bryce Hepner (Ohio State)

Lillard looking tough here against a fast and funky Buckeye, as Lillard takes the initial lead 3-1. His lead sits at 6-3 with 90 seconds to go in the third. This one has been all Lillard! The Hoosier picks up another takedown in short time and puts Hepner on his back for the fall with just seconds remaining on the clock

165 pounds: No. 5 Antrell Taylor (Nebraska) beats No. 12 Maxx Mayfield, 7-2

Taylor has impressed all year for Nebraska, and today is no exception. He’s up 7-2 over Mayfield with one minute to go in the third period. The score holds, and it’s Taylor moving on to the quarterfinals. 

157 pounds: No. 6 Chase Saldate (Michigan State) majors No. 11 Al Desantis (Rutgers) 

Saldate, who has had an impressive dual season so far, is on the board first with an early takedown. This has been Saldate’s match. He leads 8-1 with one minute to go in the third period. Riding time is in favor of the Spartan by three minutes. Riding time makes it 9-1, and Saldate is moving on! 

157 pounds: No. 7 Will Lewan (Michigan) rides out No. 10 Isaac Wilcox (Ohio State)

Will Lewan is in yet another close match, as he’s all tied up with Wilcox 1-1 with one minute to go in the third period.  We’re heading to sudden victory! One minute to go. No points. Time for tie-breakers. Lewan rides out Wilcox, and he picks up the win 2-1. 

157 pounds: No. 3 Brayton Lee (Indiana) techs No. 14 Logan Shaw (Illinois), 21-5

Brayton Lee is back! The Hooiser puts up some serious points in his first match of the tournament with a tech fall over Shaw! 

157 pounds: No. 4 Jared Franek (Iowa) survives No. 13 Luke Mechler (Wisconsin), 5-2

Franek notches the first escape, and holds a 3-1 with 20 seconds to go as the wrestlers break for Blood Time. He now leads 4-1 with just under a minute to go in the second period. Sporting a headwrap, Franek is looking the part of a Big Ten Iowa elite wrestler. Franek, with a 4-2 lead, is warned for stalling. Fifteen seconds to go. He’s hit for stalling again. That’s a point for Mechler. Franek survives though and takes the win 5-3. 

157 pounds: No. 9 Trevor Chumbley (Northwestern) beats No. 8 Joey Blaze, 5-2

Chumbley picks up the first takedown, and he holds the 3-0 lead to end the first period. He’s looking tough against No. 8 Blaze as he holds a 4-2 with less than two minutes to go in the third period. Chumbley takes down the No. 8 seed 5-2 with riding time, and the Wildcat is moving on! 

157 pounds: No. 5 Peyton Robb (Nebraska) techs No. 12 Michael North (Maryland), 15-0

Robb picks up a workmanlike technical fall 15-0 midway through the second period. The Nebraska All-American is looking sharp and ready. 

149 pounds: No. 7 Joe Zargo (Wisconsin) bonuses No. 10 Michael Cetta (Rutgers), 15-6

It’s Zargo in the lead in this bout 9-2 with 10 seconds to go in the second period. The Badger has kept his foot on the gas. With a little over a minute in the third period, he’s lead 12-2 with nearly two minutes of riding time. Zargo takes the major decision 15-6 with riding time. 

149 pounds: No. 3 Caleb Rathjen (Iowa) outlasts No. 14 Jake Harrier (Illinois), 12-6

Harrier is on the board first with an early takedown, but an escape from Rathjan makes it 3-1 with 8 seconds to go in the first period. Rathjen is a comeback wrestler, it’s in his nature. He holds an 8-4 lead with 15 seconds to go in the second period. With 90 seconds to go in the third, Rathjen maintains his lead. A shorttime takedown gives the Hawkeye a 12-6 win after riding time. 

149 pounds: No. 5 Dylan D’Emilio (Ohio State) bonuses No. 12 Braden Stauffenberg (Michigan State), 11-3

D’Emilio finished on the podium last year at 141, and it’s clear he has the talent to make a similar run at 149 pounds. He leads takes the match decision win over Stauffenberg 11-3 with riding time.

149 pounds: No. 4 Tyler Kasak pins No. 13 Aiden Vandenbuck

Penn State, unsuprisingly, came to wrestle. Kasak jumps out to an early 7-0 lead with 20 seconds to go in the first period, but he doesn’t even need a second period. He picks up the fall and big team points for the Nittany Lion. 

149 pounds: No. 6 Ethen Miller (Maryland) shuts out No. 11 Marcos Polanco (Purdue), 5-0

With less than minute to go in the third, Miller is in the driver’s seat with a 4-0 lead over the Boilermaker. Miller is moving on with a 5-0 win after riding time. 

149 pounds: No. 8 Graham Rooks (Indiana) outscores No. 9 Drew Roberts (Minnesota), 7-4

Rooks picks up a critical takedown in sudden victory to punch his ticket to the next round of the championship bracket. 

141 pounds: No. 6 Danny Pucino (Illinois) beats No. 11 Kal Miller (Maryland), 8-3

Miller works to fight his way out of a hole against Pucino, but he can’t make up enough points fast enough. Pucino takes it 8-3. 

141 pounds: No. 7 Mitch Moore (Rutgers) pins No. 10 Vance Vombaur (Minnesota)

Moore with the pin! He’s moving on and will have No. 2 Jesse Mendez next. 

141 pounds: No. 4 Brock Hardy (Nebraska) pins No. 13 Kolby McClain (Northwestern) 

That’s a first period fall for Brock Hardy! He’s moving on! 

141 pounds: No. 8 Jordan Hamdan tops No. 9 Danny Fongaro, 4-2

In a one takedown match, Hamdan takes the win 4-2. He’ll get No. 1 Beau Bartlett next. 

141 pounds: No. 5 Sergio Lemley bonuses No. 12 Greyson Clark, 14-2

Lemley is on the board first with a first-period takedown. He dominates the remainder of the match and picks up a bonus-point win in his first Big Ten tournament with a strong 14-2 victory. 

141 pounds: No. 3 Real Woods techs No. 14 Felix Lettini, 16-0

Real Woods is showing why he was an NCAA finalist last year, as he takes a quick 7-0 y lead in his first round match. With 30 seconds to go in the second period, Woods now leads 12-0 with nearly three minutes of riding time. This match has been all Woods. One minute to go. Woods leads 13-0 with 3:17 f riding time. Takedown Woods. That’s a tech for the Hawkeye. 

133 pounds: No. 14 Brody Teske outscrambles No. 3 Nic Bouzakis, 15-13 

This is one of the most interesting matches of the first round, as Teske ended up in the No. 14 spot after a last-minute lineup switch from Iowa. It’s Bouzakis though who is fast off the whistle, and Buckeye is up 3-1 with 30 second to go in the first period. Bouzakis wins the challenge for near fall points and takes the lead 7-2 over the Hawkeye. Another takedown pushes his lead to 10-2, and he’s in bonus territory now looking very much in control of this match. Teske is no quitter though. A takedown for the Hawk cuts Bouzakis’ lead. Teske trails 10-6 heading into the third period and will start in the bottom position. An escape and a takedown would tie it. Escape Teske. Bouzakis leads 10-7. Takedown Bouzakis. He leads 13-7 with one minute to go. Teske! Brody finds a way to win with some funky scrambling in short time to earn further advancement in the championship bracket. 

133 pounds: No. 11 Dustin Norris (Purdue) upsets No. 6 Anthony Madrigal (Illinois), 10-5

Norris looks tough here in upset territory with an 10-4 lead over Madrigal as time ticks down in the third period. The Boilermaker is moving on with a 10-5 win.

133 pounds: No. 4 Jacob Van Dee (Nebraska) techs No. 13 Patrick Adams (Northwestern) , 21-5

Van Dee is on the board fast! He takes a quick 6-1 lead over Adams after two takedowns in the first period. By the end of the first three minutes, the Cornhusker has pushed his lead up to 12-3. Van Dee takes the 21-5 tech fall win with less than a minute left in the second period. 

133 pounds: No. 7 Braxton Brown (Maryland) survives No. 10 Cayden Rooks (Indiana), 6-4

Braxton Brown is here to put on a show for his home fans! He’s up 3-0 with a quick, early takedown. The Terps has been punishing on top too and has accumulated over two minutes of riding time here in the first period. Brown leads 5-4 heading into the second period and still holds on to his riding time of just over two minutes. One minute to go. A takedown could win it for Rooks. Indiana’s Rook’s nearly picked up that winning takedown, but it’s Brown moving on at the end of the day with a narrow 6-4 win. 

133 pounds: No. 8 Tyler Wells (Minnesota) stops No. 9 Nicolar Rivera (Wisconsin) 8-4

Wells takes the early lead with a first-period takedown. Another takedown gives Wells the 6-1 lead with 20 seconds to go in the first period. Rivera starts to mount a comeback with a third-period takedown, but Wells holds on for the 8-4 win over the Badger. He’s the second Wisconsin wrestler so far continuing his journey through the championship bracket. 

133 pounds: No. 5 Aaron Nagao shuts out No. 12 Andrew Hampton, 11-0

The Penn State All-American is off to a hot start! He leads 7-0 after just the first minute. Nagao is so tough on top — he extends his lead 10-0 with 30 seconds to go in the second period. Hampton is struggling to get off the bottom as Nagao looks to ride him out for the last few seconds of the third period. That’s an 11-0 major decision for the Nittany Lion! 

125 pounds: No. 6 Braeden Davis (Penn State) dominates No. 11 Justin Cardani (Illinois), 11-1

Davis has Cardani in trouble! He’s looking for the fall, but he’ll settle for back points to take the lead 6-0 with 30 seconds to go in the second period. Davis picks up a short-time takedown and more back points to earn a bonus-point win in his first Big Ten tournament win over his career. 

125 pounds: No. 7 Michael DeAugustino (Northwestern) takes down No. 10 Tristan Lujan (Michigan State), 4-1 (SV)

At the end of the second period, DeAugustino’s escape is the lone point on the board, but Lujan is a good position here as he has over one minute of riding time. An early escape would give him the lead, but DeAugustino’s too tricky. He holds Lujan down just long enough to send that riding time down under a minute. This one is all tied up 1-1 with 90 seconds to go. Lujan is in on a shot in the final seconds, and it goes to review. No takedown. First sudden victory match of the morning. We’re scrambling! With a little over a minute to go, DeAugustino gets it done. He’s moving on. 

125 pounds: No. 9 Dean Peterson (Rutgers) tops No. 8 Brendan McCrone (Ohio State), 3-2

This is more like the kind of close, nail-bitter match that many expected at 125 pounds. Peterson holds the lead with less than a minute to go in the first period 2-0, but this is anyone’s match. McCrone picks up a reversal to tie the match, but Peterson has riding time. Thirty seconds to go! Peterson picks up the 3-2 win with riding time. 

125 pounds: No. 5 Caleb Smith (Nebraska) techs No. 12 Massey Odiotti (Northwestern) 24-8

Odiotti with the first takedown of the tournament as he takes a quick lead over Nebraska’s Caleb Smith. An escape from Smith narrows Odiotti’s lead to two points with just over 90 seconds remaining in the first period. What a start for the Wildcat! Smith responds with a takedown of his own and then goes to work on top. He leads 8-3 with 30 seconds to go in the first period. Smith extends his lead 12-4 with one minute to go in the second period. Odiotti escapes to start the third, but he still trails 12-5. Smith takes the win 24-8. What a strong, offensive performance from the graduate Husker! 

125 pounds: No. 4 Patrick McKee (Minnesota)  techs No. 13 Tommy Capul (Maryland) 19-4

Pat McKee is in peak Pat McKee form. The Golden Gopher has surged to a 9-1 lead over Capul early in the first and ends the period with a 12-2 lead and over two minutes of riding time. McKee will pick up a 19-4 tech fall before the end of the second. He’s into the quarterfinals! 

125 pounds: No. 3 Eric Barnett (Winsconsin) pins No. 14 Blaine Frazier (Indiana)

Barnett is on the board quick in the first period over Frazier, as he takes the 3-0 lead over the Hoosier. Blood time already. This tournament is madness. And that’s a first period fall for Barnett! He’s moving on!
