Glenn Phillips is mostly known for his ability to play big shots in limited-overs cricket for New Zealand and the teams he represents in franchise leagues around the world. But in World Cup 2023, he has shown glimpses of his bowling prowess.

In six matches in the ongoing mega event, Phillips has picked up six wickets. His strike-rate of 22, economy rate of 4.68 and average of 17.16 are the best among all the New Zealand bowlers in the tournament.
Phillips was exceptional when the Kiwis faced Pat Cummins’ Australia on Saturday, October 28 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Bangalore. He finished with excellent figures of 10-0-37-3.
Phillips gave New Zealand their first breakthrough after he dismissed David Warner. He came to his team’s rescue after Warner and Travis Head put on 175 runs for the opening wicket off 19.1 overs.
Soon after, Phillips accounted for the wicket of Head, who smashed the fastest hundred on his World Cup debut. The off-break bowler did not stop there and got the wicket of Steve Smith, who scored 18 runs off 17 balls before throwing his wicket away.
Before the World Cup 2023, the 26-year-old Phillips had only bowled 27 overs in 20 ODIs and picked up six wickets. He has picked up 40 wickets in first-class cricket, 24 wickets in List A cricket and 17 wickets in T20s.
Phillips has also been impressive with the bat after he scored 71 runs against Afghanistan on October 18 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
