India pacer Mohammed Shami is glad that the team’s bowling unit stepped up during the World Cup 2023. While speaking on Agenda Aajtak, Shami said that India’s batting has been in focus for many years now and he was happy that the conversation shifted to the bowling unit due to their tremendous performance in the tournament.
Speaking about the World Cup, Shami said that India lost the final due to a bad day but had a great tournament overall. India put in a dominating show in the home tournament and had a 10-match unbeaten run in the final. India faltered against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in the summit clash, on November 19. The pacer said that Indian cricket is known for batters in general but in the World Cup, bowlers matched the batting unit’s might.
“From the day I was born, I was hearing that there is hardly any team that can match India’s batting might. We used to keep hearing that. Indian cricket was known because of its batters,” Shami told Aajtak.
The Bengal pacer finished as the highest wicket-taker in the tournament – with 24 wickets to his name. Alongside Shami, Jasprit Bumrah finished with 20 wickets and even bowled the most number of dot balls in the tournament.
“In this World Cup, the way we played, I think 80 percent of people enjoyed our bowling line-up. It was a different atmosphere at the stadiums in the ground. I can sense that the public was enjoying our bowling performance. The crowd enjoyed our bowling show and we also enjoyed each other’s success,” Shami further added.
The Indian team had one of the best strike-bowling units in the tournament and bundled out opposition teams 8 times out of 11 matches. India’s most dominating bowling performances came against England and Sri Lanka where they bowled out the teams for 129 and 55 runs respectively.
