IPL 2025: BCCI holds ‘constructive dialogue’ with 10 teams ahead of auction

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Wednesday, July 31 that it will take forward the recommendations of all IPL franchise owners to the tournament’s governing council. Notably, the BCCI held a meeting with all ten owners at their headquarters in Mumbai to discuss changes in the upcoming season in 2025.

There were several points of discussion during the meeting regarding the number of retentions ahead of the mega auction, right-to-match rule and the limit of foreign and uncapped players retention. Deliberations were also made on several commercial aspects of the league such as merchandising, licensing and gaming.

“The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday organized a constructive dialogue with the owners of the 10 franchises on various subjects pertaining to the upcoming season of the TATA IPL. The franchise owners tabled feedback on player regulations and other commercial aspects, including central merchandising, licensing, and gaming. The BCCI will now take these recommendations to the IPL Governing Council for further deliberation and evaluation before formulating the IPL player regulations,” said Jay Shah in a media release.

Discussions to be held on Impact Player Rule

Ahead of the meeting, it was reported that franchises will decide whether to continue with the Impact Player Rule. Notably, the rule became a hotly debated topic in the recent edition after teams shattered record books with monumental totals. The tournament featured eight 250-plus scores as SRH broke the record for highest IPL total twice in the tournament.

Following a season full of record-breaking totals, eight out of the nine highest scores in IPL history featured in the 2024 season. The season also featured the highest-ever chase in the history of the league as PBKS chased down 262 in 18.2 overs. It will be interesting to see whether the IPL governing council continue with the rule or amend it for the upcoming season. BCCI will give an update on the details of the governing council meeting in the coming days.
