Fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq has backed Afghanistan to perform well in the T20 World Cup to be held later this year in the West Indies and United States of America (USA).
Naveen is currently in India where the Afghans are facing Rohit Sharma’s India in a 3-match T20I series. The speedster said that Afghanistan are known for their dominating style of play and should be able to do well in the mega event.
Naveen said that Afghanistan got a lot of confidence from their performance in the ODI World Cup last year on Indian soil. Although Hashmatullah Shahidi’s men could not advance to the semis, they beat Pakistan, England, Netherlands and Sri Lanka to hog the limelight.
“Afghanistan are renowned for T20 cricket. Afghanistan are dominant when it comes to T20 cricket. We are high on confidence after a good show in the ODI World Cup,” Naveen was quoted as saying to the Times of India before the second T20I against India on Sunday, January 14 at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
“We are sure that we will carry on the same momentum in the series (vs India) and later on in the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and US,” he added.
Naveen did not have the best of outings when Afghanistan lost to India by six wickets at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. Naveen finished with figures of 3.3-0-43-3 as the home team chased down a target of 159 with 15 balls left in their innings. Afghanistan are yet to beat India in T20Is since their first meeting back in 2010.
