ICC Test Rankings: Yashasvi Jaiswal continues fine run, moves to 3rd

India’s young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has continued his fine run in Test cricket as the southpaw broke into the top 3 after his stunning performances in the Kanpur Test on October 2, Wednesday. Jaiswal, who was in the 5th spot after the first Test in Chennai, leapfrogged Steve Smith to move into his new career-best ranking.

The opener was named Player of the Match in the rain-affected Test against Bangladesh, where his knocks of 72 and 51 saw him achieve a new career-high in the Test batter rankings. Jaiswal climbed two spots to secure third place, with only England’s Joe Root and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson ranking higher than him in the latest Test standings.

Jaiswal currently has 792 rating points, the highest for an Indian in the rankings so far. Root leads the list with 899 points, while Williamson has 829. Virat Kohli, in 6th spot, is the second-best ranked Indian in the rankings at the moment. Rishabh Pant in 9th, is the only other Indian in the top 10.

Rohit Sharma slipped out of the top 10 and is currently in 15th spot after moving down 5 places, while Shubman Gill is in the 16th spot.

Jaiswal’s magnificent 2024

Jaiswal has been in stellar form for India in 2024. The opener has scored 929 runs in 8 Tests so far with an average of 66.35. Jaiswal would talk about his knocks in Kanpur and said he is always trying his best for the team and every innings is important for him.

“I think I was just thinking what I can do for my team. The situation was different in Chennai, and different here. I was just trying to do what I should do for my team and was trying my best. Every innings is important. I try my best and prepare in that manner,” said Jaiswal.

The new rankings also saw Jasprit Bumrah climb to the No.1 spot, leapfrogging R Ashwin as the No.1 Test bowler in the world.
