Delhi Capitals’ Annabel Sutherland warms up for WPL 2024 with record Test double century vs South Africa Women

Annabel Sutherland, agonisingly, fell short of making history for Australia Women despite scoring 210 runs off 256 balls against South Africa Women in the Only Test at the WACA in Perth.

The 22-year-old Sutherland became only the fifth Australian woman to score a Test double hundred after Joanne Broadbent, Michelle Goszko, Karen Rolton and Ellyse Perry.

Perry holds the record for the highest individual score after she racked up an unbeaten 213 against England back in November 2017 at the North Sydney Oval.

Sutherland was unbeaten on 202 at Tea on Day 2 of the Test and was all set to go past Perry’s record for Australia. However, she fell 3 runs short after Chloe Tryon accounted for her wicket.

Sutherland’s knock, laced with 27 fours and 2 sixes, helped Australia post 575 for 9 (declared) and take a lead of 499 runs in the first innings.

Sutherland in terrific form before WPL 2024

After the Women’s Test, Sutherland will head to India where she will play for the Delhi Capitals in the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL). In the auction that took place last year, DC shelled out a whopping Rs 2 crore for the all-rounder.

Apart from performing with the bat, Sutherland was up to the mark with the ball as well. The youngster picked up the wickets of Sune Luus, Tazmin Brits and Delmi Tucker and finished with impressive figures of 9-2-19-3.

On the back of her spell, Australia bowled the Proteas Women out for a paltry score of 76 in 31.2 overs.

Sutherland was a part of the Gujarat Giants last season, but failed to make an impact, after which she was released by the Beth Mooney-led team.

In the Capitals, Sutherland will play under former Australian skipper Meg Lanning and will be looking for a better showing.
