NEW DELHI: Deepthi Jeevanji, an Indian para athlete, achieved a world record time of 55.06 seconds in the women’s 400m T20 category at the Para Athletics World Championship 2024 in Kobe, Japan, on Monday.
This outstanding performance earned her a gold medal in the event. During the qualifying round, Jeevanji set a new Asian record with a time of 56.18 seconds, securing her place in the finals of the Women’s 400m T20 heat.
Jeevanji’s exceptional performance was also showcased at the Asian Para Games 2023, where she clinched the gold medal in the Women’s 400m-T20 event.
She finished ahead of Thailand’s Orawan Kaising, who recorded her personal best time of 59.00s, settling for the silver medal. Japan’s Niina Kanno secured the bronze medal with her personal best time of 59.73s.
In other events at the Para Athletics World Championship 2024, para athlete Yogesh Kathuniya won a silver medal in the Men’s F56 category Discus Throw with a throw of 41.80 meters. India’s medal tally increased to 2 after Day 3, with Preethi Pal winning a bronze medal in the Women’s 200m T35 category.
Nishad Kumar, the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics Silver Medalist, made India proud in the Men’s High Jump T47 final with an impressive season-best mark of 1.99 meters. Ram Pal also performed well, finishing 6th with his season-best performance of 1.90 meters.
