Monday Madness: Two SCOOP Titles in Three Hours for Matthew Stumpf

It was a manic Monday for the 2024 Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) on PokerStars, with the curtain drawing on 24 tournaments. Ambassador Lex Veldhuis was among a fresh batch of SCOOP champions following his Titan’s victory last night.

However, the spotlight shone brightest on Matthew “Stumpfed” Stumpf. The Canadian grinder reminded everyone why he’s one of the most feared players on the platform, as Stumpf closed out not one but two High SCOOP events on the same day for a combined score of $121,255.

He secured his triumphs within the span of a few hours and had to overcome some of the best online poker players to have ever taken to the virtual felt.

A Day to Remember for “Stumpfed”

A two-time EPT Online Main Event winner and WSOP Main Event Champion were among those to make the final table in SCOOP 43-H: $1,050 NLHE [6-Max], highlighting the standard of competition Stumpf had to navigate as he picked up his first SCOOP win of the night.

“WhatIfGod”, who won back-to-back EPT Online Main Events in 2020 and 2021, was the first to depart the final table, picking up $15,838. High roller regular Talal “raidalot” Shakerchi was next to leave.

Stumpf then outlasted savants such as 2020 WSOP Main Event champion Damian “pampa27” Salas and Thomas “MarToMchat” Boivin before downing “Joelauson7” heads-up to capture the $83,002 first-place prize.

Overall, the tournament had 465 entries, creating a $465,000 prize pool that just eclipsed the $450,000 guarantee. Fifty-nine players made the money, two of which were PokerStars ambassadors. Sebastian Huber managed to make it through the bubble and bowed out in 55th place for the $2,325 min-cash. SCOOP League team captain Fintan Hand went a bit deeper but was unable to lock up his fourth SCOOP title as he was felled in 15th for $5,455.

Any celebrations Stumpf had planned would have to wait, as just a few hours later, he found himself at another final table. The stomping grounds this time around were in SCOOP 49-H: $1,050 NLHE [Turbo, PKO, Daily Cooldown], where $19,077 plus any bounties were awaiting the victor.

The field reached 183 entries, meaning the $200,000 guarantee sported a small overlay. PokerStars had some representation in the paid places, as Veldhuis finished in 23rd place for a final prize of $2,252.

More crushers tried to halt Stumpf’s SCOOP onslaught, but he proved to be insurmountable as his arm was raised once again after the last hand was dealt, outlasting the likes of Jonathan “Proudflop” Proudfoot and Jans “Graftekkel” Arends before defeating Bruno “great dant” Volkmann in heads-up.

Like Stumpf, there were two more players who bagged their second SCOOP titles.

Bulgaria’s “Zombob0” six-year wait for another taste of SCOOP glory ended after they reigned supreme in SCOOP 46-H: $1,050 5-Card PLO8. Online phenom Francisco “Tomatee” Benitez crushed the competition in SCOOP 48-H: $530 NLHE [Progressive KO, Big Antes] that saw him add a further $31,047 to his bankroll.

The biggest prize awarded on Monday was $161,408, and “Pastexcel’ was the recipient of the six-figure payout. They took down SCOOP 41-M: $530 NLHE [Sunday Million], topping the 2,530 entry field to claim a lion’s share of the $1,265,000 prize pool.
