Letters, Oct. 7, 2023: ‘New referee in House of Commons’

Hopefully ref’s impartial

Canada now has a new Speaker of the House of Commons. Just-elected Quebec Liberal MP Greg Fergus used a quintessential Canadian analogy to describe the duties of his new job. He accurately stated that the Speaker should be independent, impartial and non-partisan, just like a hockey referee. Sounds good. Unfortunately, this newest ‘referee’, like many of his Liberal colleagues, has also been found in violation of the Conflict of Interest Act by the ethics commissioner. That’s not to say the new Speaker would deliberately attempt to fix the game, but opposition parties will still have to wonder if they’re getting a fair call from this supposedly neutral ‘Ref’.

Indefensible

Trudeau told NATO we’ll meet the 2% GDP for military spending, something has Canada ignored since 2006. However, the Dept. of National Defence must now cut $1 billion from its budget as Defence Minister Blair agrees there is an urgent need for a major investment in our military. However, they’ll have to make do with the older equipment. Apparently, Trudeau never intended to fulfil his promise while we’re being called a freeloader. How utterly embarrassing to think our word is not our bond, eh?!

Trudeau’s many blunders

The Trudeau government wants to pick winners and losers again — i.e., favouring some and crushing others — by regulating and censoring the internet. Warren Kinsella says, “It’s a huge mistake” (Oct. 4). You bet it is! A colossal mistake. And it’s being made by the same mistake-ridden and gaffe-prone crew who have screwed up almost everything for eight years. And embarrassed Canada time and again. Wrong policies, wrong laws, wrong crippling spending, and now this. As Brian Lilley says of Trudeau, “Canadians will continue to suffer due to Trudeau’s inability to think before acting” (“PM suddenly sheepish,” Oct. 4). Canada is in a pickle with India, with our friends and allies, and with the world at large all thanks to the Trudeau Liberals. The brain trust blunderers who have tanked the economy, divided the country, and honoured a Nazi war veteran in Parliament. When will this train wreck of a government be gone?

(Canada has never been more isolated from our allies than now. Trudeau’s government has embarrassed time after time. Enough is enough, we need an election)
