NEW DELHI: England fast bowler Mark Wood believes Australia will compete “hard and fair” in their upcoming T20 World Cup match against Scotland. This match could potentially lead to the defending champions’ elimination.
Australian bowler Josh Hazlewood stirred controversy by stating, “it’s in our best interest” to witness England’s early exit. He did not rule out altering their gameplay to help Scotland reach the Super Eights rather than England in Group B.
Wood insists that their Ashes rivals will not deliberately under-perform in Saturday’s game, which follows England’s match against Namibia.
“I think that’s part of being England and Australia, isn’t it?” said Wood.
“I think actually I saw it more as a respect thing if I’m honest that he was saying that England have done well against Australia in the recent past and thinks we’re a big threat and a big team so I have no problem with it.”
Australia have secured a spot in the second round after winning all three of their games, including a 36-run victory over England.
Scotland stands in second place following a no-result match against England, along with victories over Namibia and Oman.
England trail two points behind Scotland but have a superior run-rate, which will serve as the tie-breaker if both teams end up with the same number of points.
“I’m absolutely confident Australia will play the game the hardest, that’s the Australian way, that they’ll play hard but fair and try and get the win,” said Wood.
