Angelo Mathews replaces injured Matheesha Pathirana in Sri Lanka World Cup squad | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Sri Lanka on Tuesday made a change to their World Cup squad by bringing in veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews to replace the injured pacer Matheesha Pathirana.
Pathirana suffered a shoulder injury during Sri Lanka’s match against Pakistan and had not been able to play in subsequent games against Australia and the Netherlands.
Mathews, a seasoned all-rounder, will be participating in his fourth World Cup since the 2011 edition. The 36-year-old has a wealth of experience, having played 221 ODIs for Sri Lanka. He has accumulated 5865 runs, including three centuries and 40 fifties, and has also taken 120 wickets in the format.
Mathews was initially sidelined in Sri Lanka’s original World Cup squad but was recalled as a traveling reserve last week along with pacer Dushmantha Chameera.
Pathirana is the second Sri Lankan player to be ruled out of the World Cup, following captain Dasun Shanaka, who returned home due to a quadriceps tear that requires at least three weeks of recovery time.
Chamika Karunaratne was named as Shanaka’s replacement, and Kusal Mendis has taken over as the team’s captain in Shanaka’s absence.
