Marc Scott and Hauger-Thackery take UK 5km titles

A busy weekend of road racing around UK saw national titles at stake on Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside

GREAT NORTH RUN 5km, Newcastle, Tyne & Wear, September 6

The quayside on the banks of the River Tyne was again pressed into service for the Great North Run support race which doubled as a UK championship.

Morpeth’s Scott Beattie, who had won on the same course a month earlier, was involved but had no answer as Marc Scott narrowly got the better in a tight race, over three laps, in 13:56.

The 2022 World indoor 3000m bronze medallist was well outside his best of 13:20 set four years earlier in one of the popular Podium races, but it was enough to see off Beattie despite his 13:32 best and that 13:48 from August.

Early on the field had been tightly bunched and led by City of Leeds’ Linton Taylor but at the finish the Leeds man brought up the rear of the select field in 14:48.

The women’s race was even more limited and the four takers were led home by Calli Hauger-Thackery in 15:35, some 25 seconds clear of Eloise Walker and Jess Gibbon.

This was the first recorded outing for Hauger-Thackery since a DNF in the Paris Olympics marathon four weeks earlier and represented a good return when compared to her 15:04 in another Podium race back in June.

Walker, the Scottish national short course cross-country champion, who was second in this race last year with a personal best 15:34, ran 16:00 this time.

There was also an open 5km event that was won by 43-year-old Chris Thompson, another Olympic marathoner, in 15:23.

HATFIELD 5km SERIES, in Hertfordshire Championships, September 4

Annabel Gummow won her second race of the series and did so in a course record 16:23 and also collected the county championship title en route.

Second placed Kate Rennie also went quicker than the previous week and her three second improvement to 17:35 strengthened her position at the top of the 2024 W50 rankings.

Further back there was a new British masters W70 best for Sarah Roberts who bettered the existing mark by a second with 21:22 to also improve her lifetime best, yes, at the age of 70, from 21:40.

This is the third time this year that the previous age group mark has been bettered, firstly by Sandra Branney in May at 21:51, then by Sue Haslam in June at 21:24.

RUN EXE SUMMER 5km SERIES, Exeter, Devon, September 3

Ollie Thorogood and Louise Small came out on top in the sixth and final race of the summer series that takes in a flat and fast course.

Further down the field, second ranked under-15 Paige Quinn was just a second outside her best time. With 16:52, when placing second in the women’s race to Aldershot’s Small, who was sixth overall with a 16:15 clocking.

Even further down, Okehampton’s Claudine Benstead took her fifth age group victory of the series and improved her position at the top of the UK W65 rankings with a 20:04 effort that bettered the existing age group gun to tape best of Lynn Higgins by a second.

There was no chip timing here, so Higgins chip time of 20:02 is also listed but gun to chip times take precedence.

Behind, next W65 home Jenny Reay improved her second place on the 2024 lists with 20:43, which was, amazingly, a personal best despite the Exmouth Harrier having over 30 years in the sport.
