This was a decision that was due months ago.
During the Olympics in Paris, there were reports that the deal was done and Glasgow 2026 was a go, but this update provides evidence that there are still key people who need to be convinced.
For the past month, emails have been flying between Holyrood and Westminster as the politics around this intensified.
Given the pressures on the public purse, neither the Scottish or UK government were ever going to underwrite this but I am told there are those within the Scottish government and Glasgow City Council who simply can’t be convinced of the merits of a new-look Commonwealth Games.
There are fears of reputational damage at being associated with a scaled down version of an event that was so successful in 2014.
There are also those who simply feel Glasgow shouldn’t be providing the kiss of life to a concept many see as outdated and culturally questionable.
The fact is that it’s Glasgow or bust for the Commonwealth Games in 2026.
Team Scotland have made a passionate plea as to the merits and ultimately it seems likely that the city will take this on, but the ever-decreasing budget shows that compromises continue to be made to get it over the line.
