Brampton to Carlisle victories for Carl Avery and Steph Pennycook

Latest results round-up from the roads of the UK in mid-November

BRAMPTON TO CARLISLE 10, inc Northern Athletics Championship, November 17

Point-to-point races were once a staple of the British road running scene but many, such as the Hogs Back and Chichester to Portsmouth, bit the dust due to road conditions but two majors such as the London Marathon and Great North Half have survived.

The Brampton to Carlisle is now in its 72nd year but statisticians regularly point out that it is sometimes run with a strong following wind. That was not the case this year as Carl Avery battled with Morpeth clubmate Laurence McCourt before winning in 48:43.

Conditions were cold with little wind as Avery, who ran 2:17:09 in the Frankfurt Marathon just three weeks earlier, retained his title some 39 seconds quicker than his 2023 time.

The women’s section was won by 2022 winner Steph Pennycook in 54:38, 13 seconds to the good of her previous time over the route and who was also second in 2021 and 2013.

Pennycook now heads to the Valencia Marathon, for her debut over the distance, in the next couple of weeks.
