Beattie and Partridge win Quayside 5km titles – AW

Newcastle-Gateshead event kicks off our latest UK-wide distance running results round-up

QUAYSIDE 5km, Newcastle-Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, August 7

Finishing in the shadow of the old Baltic Flour Mill, Scott Beattie won by 10 seconds from Jonathan-Escalante-Phillips, in 13:46, to retain his title in exactly the same time as in 2023 and go fifth on the 2024 UK 5km rankings.

It was the Morpeth Harrier’s first outing on the roads this year and followed a fourth placing in the UK 5000m championships.

Escalante-Phillips 13:56 was a personal best by seven seconds after 13 years of effort over the distance.

Lily Partridge won the women’s section by 16 seconds in a personal best 15:42, two seconds inside her only previous outing over the distance.

Partridge ran 2:25:12 in December’s Valencia Marathon in an attempt to make the UK team for the Paris Olympic marathon.

Poppy Tank, the 2023 UK steeplechase champion and 11th placed runner in December’s Euro Cross, was in her first 5km road race for nearly six years, so it was no surprise that her 16:00 was a personal best by more than a minute.

The race followed the quayside of the River Tyne from the Newcastle side of the Millennium Bridge, under the famous Tyne Bridge before crossing the Millennium Bridge to the finish in Baltic Square and offered increased prize money this year.

With 265 finishers in the A race things were crowded, hence the need for a B race around the tight course and 358 finished that one and was where some of the leading older age groups among the women competed.
