NEW DELHI: India spinner Shreyanka Patil couldn’t hide her joy after claiming her first World Cup wicket, and to make it even sweeter, it came against arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday.
Shreyanka delivered an impressive four-over spell, claiming two wickets while maintaining an economy rate of 3.00, conceding just 12 runs. Her key dismissals included Muneeba Ali (17 off 26 balls, 2 fours) in the 10th over and Tuba Hassan (0 off 3 balls) in the 15th over.
Reflecting on her performance after the first innings, Shreyanka expressed her delight at taking her first wicket in the Women’s World Cup.
“Getting the first World Cup wicket is pretty special, and getting it against Pakistan is even more special. Thanks to the crowd here for consistently cheering for us. Amazing to be a part of this World Cup… It was a batting wicket but we as bowlers picked some crucial wickets in the powerplay and the death overs,” Shreyanka said at the mid-innings break.
The 22-year-old further commended her fellow Indian bowlers for securing crucial wickets during both the powerplay and death overs, effectively challenging Pakistan’s batting lineup.
“I think I’m going to have iced tea now. It is pretty hot and humid, but we have practiced here and we had a training camp in Bangalore as well. We as the bowling unit have done our job, up to the batters now to do their job and get us home nice and early,” Shreyanka added.
Earlier, Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first, with Nida Dar (28 off 34 balls, 1 four) and Muneeba Ali (17 off 26 balls, 2 fours) standing out as the only key contributors from the Women in Green. Their efforts helped Pakistan post a total of 105/8 in the first innings.
India’s bowling attack was exceptional, claiming crucial wickets throughout the innings. Arundhati Reddy led the charge, taking three wickets in her four overs at an economy rate of 4.80. Impressively, all Indian bowlers contributed with wickets.
