Former India cricketer Zaheer Khan likely to become LSG’s new mentor: Report | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Zaheer Khan, a former Indian bowler, is reportedly in discussions with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) regarding a potential role as the team’s mentor, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
The report suggests that LSG is eager to include the ex-India player in their coaching staff. Additionally, two other franchises have expressed interest in securing the services of the 45-year-old.
From 2018 to 2022, Zaheer held the position of director of cricket for the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise, prior to which he served as the head of global development for the team.
Lucknow’s franchise experienced a void in their mentorship position following Gautam Gambhir‘s departure, which remained unfilled. Gambhir transitioned to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as a mentor for the IPL 2024 season, guiding them to their third IPL title.
Initial speculation suggested Zaheer as a potential candidate for India’s bowling coach role. However, this appointment did not materialize. Subsequently, Morne Morkel, a former South African fast bowler, was recruited to Gambhir’s coaching team, assuming the position of bowling coach for the Indian national cricket team.
According to a report from ESPNcricinfo, LSG plans to expand Zaheer’s role, involving him in scouting and player development programs during the off-season.
Justin Langer is currently the head coach of the franchise, having taken over from Andy Flower ahead of IPL 2024. In the last T20 League season, LSG fell short of reaching the playoffs.
Zaheer, regarded as one of the finest left-arm pacers in cricket history, claimed 311 wickets in 92 Test matches and a total of 610 wickets in 309 international games for India.
In the IPL, Zaheer played for teams like Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Daredevils. Over 100 IPL matches, he took 102 wickets with an economy rate of 7.59.
